Events dedicated to honoring the memory of fallen Ukrainian journalists were held on September 16 at the Department of Journalism and Philology of Sumy State University.

At the initiative of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Remembrance Day has been celebrated on September 16 since 2007, on the day of the tragic death of Georgy Gongadze. During the war with russia, the number of fallen media workers increased – according to verified data from the NUJU and the International Federation of Journalists, as of September 9, 2025, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the territory of Ukraine, russia has killed at least 130 media workers.

The events organized by the teachers of the Department of Journalism and Philology at Sumy State University had different formats. They discussed the history of Remembrance Day, remembered fallen colleagues by name, in particular those who were killed during the russian-Ukrainian War. Special attention was paid to the memory of journalists who lost their lives while performing their professional duties in the Sumy Region.

The students themselves created their own sketches about their fallen colleagues. Preparing for the Day of Remembrance of Ukrainian Journalists, they independently chose the names of those they wanted to tell about.

Such events are extremely important for students of the Journalism specialty, because from the first steps in the profession, future media professionals must understand the seriousness of the chosen cause, feel their own responsibility, and, no less importantly, unity with the journalistic community. Let us remember those who gave their lives in the fight for the truth, and let us be worthy of their professional legacy!
