The cost of insurance for European journalists covering the war in Ukraine is “too high and inadequate.” Because of this, many freelancers work without insurance.

This is stated in a statement by the Congress of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) posted on its website.

According to Reporters Without Borders, more than 12,000 Ukrainian and foreign media representatives are accredited to cover the war.

The EFJ notes that according to the Council of Europe’s Platform to promote the protection of journalism and safety of journalists, the list of injured media workers is increasing every day.

Since freedom of the press goes hand in hand with the safety of journalists, the EFJ calls for seeking cooperation with international partners to lobby for a more comprehensive insurance contract.

They add that it is also essential to identify other lines of assistance besides insurance companies, such as public funds, etc.

As earlier reported, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) reported that the insurance for a business trip to Ukraine costs Swedish journalists EUR 6,000 per week.
