The President of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Sergiy Tomilenko, presented the president of the Swedish media business association, Tidningsutgivarna (TU), Johan Taubert with a special gift, a copy of the frontline newspaper, Zoria, from the frontline town of Lyman in the Donetsk Region. The newspaper is designed as a museum exhibit. This is a token of gratitude to the Swedish colleagues for their support of the Ukrainian frontline press.
One copy, Sergiy Tomilenko emphasizes, is much more than one newsroom. These are 25 local newspapers from seven frontline regions of Ukraine and thousands of readers who continue to receive their newspapers even under shelling.
“Connection, trust and hope that do not disappear even in the most difficult conditions,” is how the NUJU President describes what is behind each issue of the frontline publication.
Sergiy Tomilenko recalled that at the end of last year, several editors spoke about the threat of a complete stop to the publication of newspapers – due to a lack of funds and increased russian attacks.
Kateryna Zavarzina, a journalist and publisher from the Zaporizhzhia Region, shared with the President of the NUJU a conversation that he cannot forget: “I ask readers to subscribe to the newspaper for half a year. And they answer: I love your newspaper. But I don’t know if I will live here next week…”
In such realities of frontline journalism, the solidarity of Swedish colleagues is of particular importance. Thanks to the partnership between TU and Swedish publishers, 25 Ukrainian newspapers have been able to continue publishing in recent months.
As Sergiy Tomilenko notes, the president of Tidningsutgivarna, Johan Taubert, was sincerely impressed by the professionalism, dedication and courage of Ukrainian journalists and publishers. He promised that the donated copy of the frontline newspaper would take pride of place in the headquarters of TU, one of the most influential associations of the Swedish media business.
“I really hope that this assistance will continue. Journalists are important,” the President of the NUJU emphasized.
Sergiy Tomilenko separately addressed his colleagues from the frontline press: “Dear colleagues from the frontline press, I have given 25 copies of the newspapers to my friend Johan. Each of your important war publications is presented in Stockholm. As proof of our effective friendship.”
