Today, in Istanbul, at a meeting of the Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a hearing is being held on the topic: “Journalists matter: the need to strengthen efforts to release Ukrainian journalists held captive by the russian federation.”
The rapporteur is Yevheniya Kravchuk, a Verkhovna Rada member of Ukraine / Head of the Verkhovna Rada Interim Investigation Commission on Violations of the Rights of Journalists and russia’s Crimes against Journalists.
During the hearing, Yevheniya Kravchuk spoke about the fate of Ukrainian journalists held in russian captivity, about the testimonies of media workers voiced during parliamentary hearings, as well as about the tragic fate of journalist Victoria Roshchina, who was tortured in russian captivity.
Yevheniya Kravchuk also presented the monitoring data of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) on russian attacks on the media sphere. In particular, it was reported that in May, the NUJU recorded a record 22 verified cases of the impact of russian attacks on civilian journalists and media outlets — the highest monthly figure since the beginning of the year.
The hearing was joined by the Ambassador of Ukraine to Turkiye Nariman Celal (Dzhelal). A former prisoner of the Kremlin, who himself spent almost three years in russian prison, he spoke about the persecution of journalists in the occupied Crimea and other temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
It is important that the topic of Ukrainian journalists — both illegally imprisoned by russia and those who continue to work under fire — remains on the agenda of the Council of Europe.
