Journalists and media workers are under great pressure due to Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine. Journalists lose their lives, the Russians deprive them of their freedom, they go missing.

This was emphasized by Chargé d’affaires, CDM of the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine Iijima Yasumasa, during the international expert discussion “Two hard years of the war: overcoming challenges for journalists` safety and media resilience”, which was held by the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine together with the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy under the patronage of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO.

– UNESCO continues to implement its urgent action program to protect journalists and help citizens regain access to verified information. Recently, during a visit to UNESCO, the Japanese delegation confirmed its intention to continue helping Ukraine and allocate 14.7 million USD for UNESCO activities in all programme sectors in Ukraine. This year, Japan is focusing on helping journalists, providing them with material, psychological and financial assistance and supporting them in the development of media viability in this difficult time of war, – said Mr. Yasumasa.

He emphasized that the role of journalists, especially during war, is very important, because the media is the source of truth for people.

– Thanks to their work, Ukraine will win! I wish Ukrainian journalists safety and success! – emphasized Сhargé d’affaires, CDM of the Embassy of Japan to Ukraine.

Ujihara Takaaki, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, also took part in the international expert discussion “Two hard years of the war: overcoming challenges for journalists` safety and media resilience”

In his turn, Sergiy Tomilenko, NUJU President, emphasized the great role of the Japanese government in supporting and developing freedom of speech in Ukraine and thanked this country for helping Ukrainian media workers. Danijel Cuturic, Project Coordinator of the UNESCO Desk in Ukraine, who also participated in the NUJU`s discussion expressed gratitude for Japan’s strong support of UNESCO initiatives in Ukraine.
