The decision to award a state payment to the family of journalist Victoria Roshchina, who died while performing her professional duties, was adopted by a majority vote by the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting.

This took place at today’s meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission on the Payment of One-Time Cash Assistance in the Event of Death (Death) or Injury (Concussion, Trauma, or Disfigurement) of a Journalist While Performing Their Professional Duties.

At the meeting, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) was represented by lawyer Danil Serbin, while NUJU First Secretary and Commission Member Lina Kushch joined online.

According to them, the discussion was difficult: individual ministries demanded a document on the editorial assignment, which, given the circumstances of the journalist’s work, could not be provided.

“The Law on State Support for Media provides for the payment of a one-time allowance to the family in the event of the death of a journalist while performing professional duties. Thus, the state was to ensure payment regardless of the presence of an editorial assignment,” Danil Serbin emphasized.

The family’s lawyer, Yevheniya Kapalkina, spoke at the meeting, providing official responses to the NUJU and the Ukrainska Pravda newsroom regarding their requests for confirmation of Victoria Roshchina’s journalistic status.

The representative of the Ministry of Defense also confirmed that Victoria Roshchina had a valid accreditation from the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), which confirms her journalistic status.

During the discussion, the commission members also mentioned that, at the request of the NUJU, Victoria Roshchina was posthumously awarded an order, and also noted international support, in particular, statements from the European Federation of Journalists and other professional organizations.
