On the eve of the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) launches a campaign to maintain the network of Journalists’ Solidarity Centers in 2025. The initiative comes at a critical time as UNESCO’s funding, which has been key to the Centers’ operations, will end on March 15, 2025.

The Centers, established in 2022 through the IFJ/EFJ Safety Fund support, have become vital lifelines for both Ukrainian and foreign journalists. They provide safe workspaces, protective equipment, IFAK kits, and emergency assistance, particularly in frontline regions like Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro. The initial support from the Safety Fund enabled the purchase of the first bulletproof vests for Ukrainian journalists and essential equipment.

Last week, at the international conference “Ukrainian Media During the War,” which brought together over 130 participants from leading press freedom organizations, the crucial role of the Centers was highlighted. The European Federation of Journalists has endorsed NUJU’s campaign.

“The establishment and operation of our Solidarity Centers became possible thanks to the incredible international journalists’ solidarity following the invasion,” said NUJU President Sergiy Tomilenko. “This unity within our professional community has helped save lives and maintain the flow of truthful information from Ukraine. Now, we need to ensure the Centers’ continued operation in 2025.“
