Journalist Vira Iliyina: “Time management is a tool, like a pen or a pencil”

With the assistance of the Ivano-Frankivsk Journalists’ Solidarity Center (JSC) of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), the training called Time Management: The Art of Time Management was held for first-year students of the Department of Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations of King Danylo University.

It was conducted by a displaced media worker from Kramatorsk, Vira Iliyina, who taught students successful planning cases. In particular, the training participants talked about how a media person can adapt such cases to themself.

“The meeting was interesting. Such communication is very helpful not only for students because training is the best way of live communication with young people. Strangely, you forget your age because youth is not just a certain period of life but rather a special state of mind. I am happy to confirm once again that we have excellent intellectual and creative journalistic potential,” emphasized Vira Iliyina.

Students also shared their impressions of the training:

• “We attended an extremely informative and relevant training on time management by displaced journalist Vira Iliyina. I am fascinated by a meaningful lecture in the format of a very comfortable and warm conversation as if people [there] had known each other for a long time. I can’t help noting the clarity and structure of the presentation. That impressed me the most. The coach was able to tell the maximum amount of necessary information very qualitatively at the same time, making the whole process interesting. I would be very happy to cooperate with Ms. Vira in the future and would also like to attend her training on strategic planning. It’s cool when a professional knows how to convey important things easily,” said student Solomiya Krysko.
• “I really liked this training, because I learned new information for myself, which is important for me now. During the class, I understood how to manage my time better; what are the techniques; and also, I got a lot of motivation not to waste my time on irritants,” Valeriya Pivtorak, a future media personality, shared her impressions.
• “Journalist Vira Iliyina told us how to manage our time properly, what tools exist that help us rationally distribute our time, what time absorbents exist preventing us from distributing the time correctly. Everything was supplemented with interesting life examples of the coach. We have gathered a lot of information for ourselves, which will help us to properly distribute and manage our time. We are waiting for the following meetings again!” said student Sviatoslav Sabadakh.
• “I really liked it, especially what concerned procrastination. The topic was clearly and easily explained. I will be happy to attend Vira Iliyina‘s training sessions in the future,” said training participant Kateryna Kalun.

The first-year student Ivanna Marushchak noted that time management training teaches how to effectively distribute time between work and rest, which increases productivity and should help reduce stress. But you should not forget that time management is a tool: if you don’t make an effort, there will be no result. At the same time, her teammate Alina Yarema hopes that the advice she wrote down from the coach will help her plan for the week.

The speaker singled out the following tips to manage time skillfully:

• don’t plan time tightly;
• to identify the problem, it is not the plan that is important but the planning process;
• determine priority tasks. For this, you can use the Eisenhower Matrix;
• do not forget that time management is a tool, like a pen or a pencil. It is very useful, but it does nothing by itself;
• remember the 80×20 principle: 20% of organized actions give 80% of the result and vice versa.
