Journalist Iryna Sytnik: I simply wouldn’t be allowed into dangerous zone without protective equipment

For protective equipment, the editor-in-chief of the Stepova Zoria weekly and the Petropavlivka.city website, Iryna Sytnik, has turned to the Dnipro Journalists’ Solidarity Center (JSC) of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) more than once. The media person has the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) accreditation and, from time to time, goes to work in the front-line territories of the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia Regions. The journalist is planning another trip, so she recently picked up a bulletproof vest, helmet, and first aid kit at the Center.

“On July 27, a large-scale fire broke out in the nearby Mykolayiv Community,” Iryna says. “I went to film both on the day of the tragedy and after. I saw with my own eyes how the rescuers fought the fire, how the consequences were eliminated, how sappers, the police, and medics worked, how the locals recovered and tried to return to life… I took a lot of photos and shot video material. Without protective equipment, I would not have been allowed there because it continued to detonate and explode even while I was working there.”

Admittedly, the reporting was no less difficult than on the Zaporizhzhia or Donetsk Axes. It would seem like a fire, but as there was a lot of fire and smoke, in addition, explosive devices detonated from time to time. Therefore, the police made sure that no one was injured.

Iryna Sytnik‘s publications have repeatedly won various journalistic competitions. This year, the media woman became a laureate of the creative competition of the Dnipro regional organization of the NUJU called Information Front-2023/24 in the category Best Journalistic Work On Military And Patriotic Topics named after Rema Suvorova. The members of the competition commission noted her work titled Yurii Symonenko: Stood Up For The Defense Of The Motherland Together With His Sons.

“The most valuable for me is the awards for publications about Ukrainian defenders,” admits Iryna Sytnik. “Each story is unique, not just written, but experienced together with the heroes and heroines. I want to learn more myself, to tell Ukrainians and the whole world more about these incredible people. I am grateful to the regional Union for recognizing my creativity and professionalism; it motivates; and – the JSC for always being there and for being able to protect yourself during such dangerous and important trips.”

In the Dnipro JSC of the NUJU, you can borrow high-quality personal protective equipment for temporary use – a PRESS-branded body armor with a helmet and a tactical first-aid kit. Rental is free but requires AFU‘s accreditation!

Call the Dnipro JSC at 050 919 84 79 (Nataliya Nazarova, the Dnipro JSC coordinator). The Center’s address is 8 Starokozatska Street.
