The European Union is allocating EUR 3 million in support for Ukrainian media. The decision was made after the russian strike on the Suspilne Dnipro newsroom and the Ukrainian Radio newsroom on November 18.

This was announced by EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova. She emphasized that since the beginning of the full-scale war, the European Union has already mobilized about a quarter of a billion euros to support civil society, journalists, and media in Ukraine. The current assistance is a continuation of this strategy, adopted against the backdrop of the difficult situation in the country.

“I don’t need to explain the importance of independent media in Ukraine. Especially now, during the explosive scandal that has shaken the country. This was discussed with Prime Minister Yuliya Svyrydenko and her ministerial team, as well as with the Deputy Chairman of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NACB), during a meeting with ambassadors of EU member states. She presented specific steps the government is taking to combat corruption and manage the energy sector, in particular, the reboot of the supervisory and management boards of key state-owned energy enterprises. Starting with Energoatom. She called on partners to come with nominations of international experts to the boards,” Katarina Mathernova emphasized.

The Ambassador added that despite russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, its railways, its media, its civilian population — and even on the “truth” itself within the framework of hybrid warfare — the EU stands with Ukraine. It supports not only the country’s reforms and reconstruction, but also the protection of the values that define Europe: freedom of speech, transparency, access to independent media, and integrity.

As reported, the regional newsrooms of Suspilne Dnipro and Suspilne Donbas, the regional newsrooms of Ukrainian Radio, the regional hub of the Institute of Mass Information Mediabase Dnipro, and the Youth Media Center were damaged as a result of the strike. The TV tower was damaged. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on the international community to condemn the russian federation’s strike on the Suspilne building in Dnipro and russia’s war on journalism.

“The premises of the Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne in Dnipro were seriously damaged as a result of the russian strike last evening. Fortunately, there were no journalists inside. We call on the international community to condemn this strike, as well as the continuation of russia’s war on journalism,” wrote Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi on platform X.
