JOURNALISTS OF UKRAINE
The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) in partnership with the Committee to Protect Journalists (New York) invites Ukrainian journalists and media workers to participate in a series of online workshops dedicated to psychological resilience and mental health during wartime.
We are pleased to present a unique opportunity to work with international expert Hannah Storm. Hannah is a leading specialist in journalist safety, mental health, and empathic leadership, with many years of experience working with international newsrooms to create an environment where open discussions about mental health and well-being are a priority. She’s the author of ‘Mental Health and Wellbeing for Journalists: a Practical Guide’ published by Routledge, the founder and co-director of Headlines Network and the former CEO of the International News Safety Institute.
The series consists of three online workshops to be held on October 15, October 29, and November 19. These sessions will allow Ukrainian journalists to discuss issues related to their mental health, how they have been impacted by covering the war in their country, and how to live with the uncertainty this war has brought to their personal lives. Participants will be able to share experiences, build support networks, and find common solutions.
The first online workshop “Journalists’ Mental Health: Basics of Self-Care” will take place on October 15 at 15:00. Key topics of this workshop include:
- An awareness of terms related to mental health
- How our bodies and brains respond when faced with threat
- How an awareness of our responses can help us cope
- Addressing the unique stress of reporting in active war zones

Background:
The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) is the largest professional organization of media workers in Ukraine. Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, NUJU has been actively working to support journalists in combat zones, providing them with protective equipment, conducting safety training, and offering psychological support. The Union also consistently advocates for journalists’ rights at national and international levels, documenting violations of freedom of speech and promoting the development of independent media in Ukraine. NUJU’s key emergency response mechanism is the network of Journalists’ Solidarity Centers, supported by the International and European Federations of Journalists and UNESCO Headquarters.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is an independent, non-profit organization based in New York that promotes press freedom worldwide and defends the rights of journalists to work safely without fear of reprisal. CPJ investigates attacks on journalists, documents press freedom violations, and advocates for the release of imprisoned journalists. The organization provides urgent assistance to journalists under threat and works to ensure justice in cases where journalists become victims of violence or persecution due to their professional activities.
