Journalists of the Italian state RAI television and radio company are on strike today “against the government’s suffocating control over the work of journalists.”

The UsigRAI trade union, which brings together some of the broadcaster’s employees, criticized the administration for trying to “turn RAI into a mouthpiece of the government,” as well as understaffing and the cancellation of the agreement on performance bonuses.

Accusations of undue political influence on RAI intensified after the recent cancellation of an appearance on one of the talk shows of opposition writer Antonio Scurati. Representatives of RAI and the government denied censorship.

Proposals to make the broadcaster more independent have been discussed for years, but, according to journalists, they have not brought results.

The journalistic community of Ukraine consistently opposes any attempts to put pressure on journalists and the editorial policy of the media, in particular, those caused by political reasons.

The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) declares its solidarity with colleagues and the inadmissibility of any illegal pressure on media workers.
