The discussion titled Women: The Price Of War, organized by the Association of Journalists of Lombardy (Italy), which is the largest of the 20 associations of journalists that are part of the Federation of Italian Journalists, took place in the Italian city of Monza on November 22. The main topic of the discussion was the protection of women’s rights in Ukraine.

“We talked about the role of women during a large-scale war. It was not only about the war in Ukraine, it was about armed conflicts in other countries; parallels were drawn,” said a participant in the discussion and the First Secretary of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Lina Kushch.

The Italian audience was most interested in the stories of Ukrainian women, particularly female journalists.

Lina Kushch reported how female journalists in Ukraine overcome various challenges: security challenges, ones related to the loss of their homes, or psychological burnout.

“We talked about how the roles of men and women in Ukraine changed after the invasion and that these challenges are an opportunity for us to strengthen the role of women in our society. We heard many words of support from Italian colleagues, from ordinary Italians who came to this meeting to learn not only about how Ukrainian journalists suffered and what difficulties they overcame but also about how they perform their professional duties during a large-scale war. What they fill their lives with,” noted Lina Kushch.
