The full-scale war also significantly impacted the Liubeshiv-based newspaper Nove Zhyttia [New Life], which is published in the Volyn Region, the region bordering Belarus. The circulation and, accordingly, the financial resources of its newsroom decreased rapidly.

Nataliya Mukha, the newspaper’s editor, said that thanks to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) and its international partner, Gazeta Wyborcza Foundation, the newspaper took part in the Ukrainian Media Fund (UMF) project. It was this support, she says, that helped not only financially but also added moral stability.

As earlier reported, thanks to the NUJU, 27 media have received funds to pay salaries to their employees in March. Within the framework of the Grant Agreement between the NUJU and the Gazeta Wyborcza Foundation, the Union, with the funds of the Ukrainian Media Fund (UMF), was able to help pay the salaries of full-time and freelance employees.

These media are 20 newspapers, four online publications, and three broadcasting companies that were recommended as a result of their participation in NUJU‘s partner projects and for their being politically independent media. Thanks to such assistance, 76 Ukrainian mass media workers received assistance.

These funds are a direct contribution of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the UMF initiative.

The Ukrainian Media Fund was created by four media organizations from the countries of Northern Europe (Finnish Media Federation (Finnmedia)); Danish media – Danske Medier; Swedish Association of Media Publishers and Norwegian Media Business Association and two publishing houses – Bonnier Group from Sweden and Agora SA from of Poland.
