Rob Beenders, the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Social Fraud, and Equal Opportunities of Belgium, recalled the difficult situation in Ukraine, where journalists live and work every day to let the world know the truth.
“In conflicts around the world – in Gaza, Ukraine and many other places such as Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo – journalists are becoming targets of violence because they show the world the reality of war, document atrocities and targeted attacks on civilians,” he stressed during a speech at the main conference of UNESCO World Press Freedom Day 2025.
According to him, independent media are necessary to combat disinformation, protect diversity, human rights, and, ultimately, the rule of law.
He also emphasized that it is journalists who “reveal what authoritarian leaders don’t want us to see” and thanks to them, people living during wartime do not go unnoticed by the rest of the world.
