A meeting of the organizing committee of the regional essay and video essay contest called Our Freedom Depends on Freedom of the Press dedicated to World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated annually on May 3, was held in the coworking space of the Ivano-Frankivsk Journalists’ Solidarity Center (JSC). Students in grades 9-11 of general secondary education institutions and students of professional pre-university and higher education institutions are invited to participate in the contest.

The organizers of the creative contest are the Ivano-Frankivsk JSC of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) and the Ivano-Frankivsk regional union of journalists with the assistance of the Departments of Education and Science of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration and the Ivano-Frankivsk City Council. The co-organizers of the contest are the Higher Educational Institution, King Danylo University, and the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University.

A working meeting on preparation for the competition with the participation of representatives of the organizers and co-organizers was held by the co-chair of the organizing committee of the competition, Honored Journalist of Ukraine/Coordinator of the Ivano-Frankivsk JSC and Secretary of the NUJU, Viktoriya Plakhta.

The participants in the meeting discussed the conditions of the competition, its goals, and objectives, and also approved the relevant Regulations.

As Viktoriya Plakhta noted, participation in the competition will give young people the opportunity to reveal their creative abilities and demonstrate their views on freedom of the press. Participants can submit competition work by choosing one of two nominations: an essay – written work of up to two A4-format pages or a video essay – video material lasting one minute.

The jury, which includes representatives of the organizers and co-organizers of the competition, will evaluate the works according to the following criteria:

  • relevance of the topic;
  • depth of analysis;
  • originality of the approach;
  • quality of presentation of the material;
  • compliance with the rules of Ukrainian spelling;
  • visual and technical quality (for video essays).

Contest works should be sent to email – [email protected] by April 17, 2025.

On May 2, on the eve of World Press Freedom Day, the winners and prize-winners of the contest will be announced and will receive valuable prizes.
