Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Kuninori Matsuda took a photo with a copy of the Vorskla newspaper, which is published in the Sumy Region near the front. He is impressed by the resilience of front-line Ukrainian journalists and expresses his solidarity with our colleagues.

The meeting of the President of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Sergiy Tomilenko, with Mr. Kuninori Matsuda, took place on September 18.

“I am grateful to Mr. Ambassador for the fruitful meeting and constant support of Ukraine and Ukrainian journalists!” emphasized the President of the NUJU in his post on the social network.

The head of the Union spoke about its priorities and activities during the war, presented the Ambassador with front-line newspapers with publications about the recent visits of two Japanese high-ranking officials to Ukraine – Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Masahito Moriyama and Minister of Justice Ryuji Koizumi.

Mr. Matsuda is sure that his photo with a copy of the Vorskla newspaper will warm the soul of the editor-in-chief, Oleksii Pasiuha, and his colleagues from Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and other regions.

The Ambassador expressed deep concern about the fate of Ukrainian journalists held captive by russia and supported the efforts of the NUJU. He advised the Union to cooperate with the office of the International Criminal Court, whose activities are actively supported by Japan. According to Mr. Matsuda, russia is deliberately persecuting journalists, perceiving them as a threat to its disinformation and propaganda.

Separately, the Ambassador noted the work of the NUJU Journalists’ Solidarity Center, which receive support through UNESCO thanks to the assistance of the Government of Japan. Through these Centers, the Union focuses great attention on the safety of Ukrainian and international journalists.

Mr. Matsuda expressed his interest in expanding the activities of the Japanese media in Ukraine, stressing that it is thanks to the presence of the media that strong support for Ukraine is ensured by the population of democratic countries.
