Priorities of cooperation to strengthen the economic stability of Ukrainian media were discussed during a visit of the Director of Operations of the Swiss Hirondelle Foundation, Nicolas Boissez, and its program manager, Sandra Fontaine, to the central office of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU).

“In the conditions of war, access to local sources of information is critical for Ukrainians,” Nicolas Boissez noted. “But, unfortunately, the media themselves are acutely suffering from the devastating economic consequences caused by the war and do need support.”

The President of the NUJU, Sergiy Tomilenko, and the First Secretary of the Union, Lina Kushch, informed the guests about the work of the Journalists’ Solidarity Centers’ network, the projects implemented by the Union since the beginning of the war.

In particular, thanks to cooperation with Hirondelle and the International Institute for Regional Media and Information (IRMI, Ukraine), the NUJU systematically conducts educational events on the economic sustainability of the media, has studied the needs of the media in the front-line and de-occupied territories, and actively disseminates practical advice on the survival of the media in war conditions on its resources.

“The program titled Increasing Ukrainian Media Stability, carried out with the support of Hirondelle and the IRMI, is the best international program to support the economic stability of mass media in Ukraine,” noted Sergiy Tomilenko. “Thanks to this project, financial, technical, and methodical assistance is provided to the newsrooms of 18 media outlets, primarily in the front-line and de-occupied territories.”

As the Hirondelle Foundation specializes, in particular, in organizing training events for journalists writing about trials on war crimes, an agreement was reached during the meeting to cooperate on encouraging Ukrainian journalists to cover such trials in order to inform a broad international audience about them.
