The President of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Sergiy Tomilenko, will take part in the World Press Freedom Day events in New York.
UNESCO is organizing a special anniversary event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s decision to establish World Press Freedom Day. Events on this occasion will be held on May 2 at the UN headquarters in New York.
Sergiy Tomilenko, representatives of the leading mass media, public institutions, and scientists from around the world, will participate in the event.
“I will talk about the role of journalists in exposing Russia’s war crimes, about the fact that in the conditions of mass violation of the rights of thousands and thousands of people during this unjust war, journalists and the media give the war victims a chance to be heard and a chance for justice,” Sergiy Tomilenko wrote.
He added that he would call for the Russians to be held accountable for war crimes against journalists and the media and for inciting war propaganda. He will talk about the importance of local media in the de-occupied and front-line territories: the NUJU has already provided support in publishing 25 such local newspapers.
