“She died because she chose freedom…” On August 8, Kyiv bid farewell to Victoria Roshchina, a 27-year-old Ukrainian journalist who died in russian captivity in September 2024. The reporter was captured in August 2023, when she went to report from the occupied territories.

From the first days of the full-scale war, she wanted to show the world how Ukrainians live under occupation and what the russians do to civilian prisoners.

Victoria Roshchina was on the list for a prisoner exchange and was supposed to return home soon. However, on September 19, 2024, she died during a transfer from Taganrog to Moscow. International and Ukrainian investigative journalists established that the returned body had numerous signs of torture.

“Eternal memory to the brave journalist. Words of support to the grieving family. Just punishment to the russian occupiers,” writes the President of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Sergiy Tomilenko.
