Tortured journalist Victoria Roshchina posthumously awarded the Order of Freedom

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on awarding human rights activist, TV journalist, and war correspondent Victoria Roshchina with a state award – “for civic courage, patriotism, selfless defense of the sovereignty and independence of the Ukrainian state, constitutional rights and human freedoms.“

“She was the embodiment of freedom for many,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy about awarding Victoria Roshchina with the Order of Freedom. In his daily address, the President once again emphasized the importance of remembering the journalist who died in russian captivity. “It is very important that she is remembered now – everyone remembers her, Ukrainian journalists remember her, and many caring people remember her. Eternal memory!”

As a reminder, Victoria died in russian captivity, where she was held after carrying out an editorial assignment in the occupied territories. Her body, with traces of torture, was returned to Ukraine in February of this year.

The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) prepared documents and a submission on awarding Victoria Roshchina a state award posthumously. The submission was made in agreement with the journalist’s family.

Victoria Roshchina remained an example of journalistic courage and faith in the freedom of Ukraine.
