Sergiy Tomilenko, a mathematician by education and a journalist by vocation, has headed the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) since 2017. In an interview, he talks about his journey in journalism, the challenges of wartime, and the important role of the media in preserving the truth. With the beginning of a full-scale war, journalism in Ukraine has changed – many media outlets have disappeared, but new ones have appeared, focused on documenting war crimes and helping victims.

The NUJU supports front-line newsrooms financially and technically, organizes training sessions, and implements projects with international partners. The network of Journalists’ Solidarity Center (JSC) has become especially important, providing journalists with resources, support, and a safe space to work. The Union also actively cooperates with Lviv University, promoting the development of young professionals.

Tomilenko‘s main dream is the victory of Ukraine and the release of all Ukrainian journalists from captivity. He advises future journalists to start practicing as early as possible, improve themselves, and not be afraid of challenges.
