Enhancing the financial sustainability of quality journalism, promoting media literacy, and transparency of online platforms are the key goals of UNESCO, which was announced by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay at an international conference that UNESCO is holding in Brussels these days on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

She stressed the importance of preserving the status of information as a public good in the era of AI, which is “changing the way information is delivered and content is produced.”

“We must also strengthen media and information literacy in the digital age and protect the economic viability of professional information production,” added Audrey Azoulay. “The level of impunity for the killings of journalists decreased by 10% between 2012 and 2024. This is an improvement, but it is still too high.”

World Press Freedom Day, proclaimed by the UN in 1993, is celebrated annually on May 3. This year’s theme is the impact of artificial intelligence on press freedom. NUJU President Sergiy Tomilenko is also participating in the special events.
