Displaced journalists, representatives of local media, and student journalists have discussed the issue of gender equality in the media and the matter of distribution of news topics between men and women with Nataliya Batrakova, the executive director of the Synergy public activity center.

The meeting was held on the initiative of the Chernivtsi Journalists’ Solidarity Center of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU). The meeting participants also found out what future we can move towards if Ukrainian society continues to be guided by ancient stereotypes.

“The economic troubles in the local media, which have intensified incredibly with the beginning of the large-scale war, force us to pay more attention to the search for financial opportunities for the survival of the media than to any internal negativity or stereotypes of thinking in teams. Today, there is still a view of the profession as a choice of permanent occupation for life. Such a position is wrong because it does not take into account that a person has a number of abilities and strives to accumulate special knowledge and skills in various spheres of activity,” notes Nataliya Batrakova.

The assessment of the profession of a journalist depends not so much on the nature of the work but on how a person treats it, how much the profession corresponds to their requests and opportunities, inclinations, and abilities. The inability or lack of habit to understand one’s traits or characteristics, ignorance or underestimation of one’s own physical characteristics leads to the wrong choice of profession.

And it would help if you did not admire only the external side of the profession. Imagine yourself, for example, as a beautiful and famous person on the TV screen.

You can often hear the opinion that the problem of gender inequality in the media does not exist or that it is exaggerated. This is a misconception. It is noteworthy that there are restrictions not only for women but also for employers who do not make efforts to overcome this problem. Instead, the media, concerned about gender equality in the team, will only benefit from this.

“Nowadays, when a brutal war is going on, many journalists have already been killed. And after our victory, there might be some rethinking of the perception of journalists’ actual state of work in media teams,” Nataliya concluded.

Call the Chernivtsi JSC by dialing 068 286 3706 (Volodymyr Bober, the Chernivtsi JSC coordinator). The Center’s address is 96 Nezalezhnosti Avenue.
