On October 6, the Simferopol occupation “court” sentenced journalist, writer, and public figure from Nova Kakhovka, Kherson Region, Serhii Tsyhipa, to 13 years in prison for “espionage.” The Ukrainian journalist spent almost a year and a half in enemy captivity, and after his abduction, no one knew where he was for a long time.

Serhii Tsyhipa‘s wife, Olena, says that at the age of 62, a 10-year or longer term for him is actually a life sentence.

You can find out the details of the situation, discuss the issue of civilian prisoners and, in particular, Ukrainian journalists, and learn about possible ways of supporting colleagues during the press conference held by the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU).

The event will take place at the press center of the NUJU in Kyiv (27a Khreshchatyk St.) on Tuesday, October 10, at 12 p.m.

Speakers:

  • Olena Tsyhipa, the wife of prisoner Serhii Tsyhipa;

  • Lina Kushch, the First Secretary of the NUJU;

  • Liudmyla Huseinova, a human rights defender/citizen journalist;

  • Mykola Semena, the secretary of the NUJU.

We invite colleagues and representatives of the public to take part in the press conference and show solidarity with Ukrainian journalists who were captured and oppressed by the occupiers.
