Russia has passed a law that obliges operators to block any communication at the request of the Federal Security Service (FSB). The law will come into force in early March.
This is reported by Deutsche Welle.
On February 20, russian ruler Vladimir Putin signed a document that was previously approved by both houses of the russian parliament. The law will come into force 10 days after signing.
According to the document, communication operators are obliged to suspend the provision of services at the request of the FSB “in cases established by regulatory legal acts of the president.”
As the publication notes, in this way the russian dictator will be able to determine the need to block the Internet and telephone communications in individual regions or the entire country without grounds.
The law stipulates that the operator “shall not be liable for improper fulfillment of obligations under a contract for the provision of communication services” if this is related to fulfilling the requirements of the FSB.
As earlier reported, russia ranked first in the world in terms of the duration of Internet outages in 2025. According to monitoring services, the total duration of Internet outages there reached 37,166 hours, and the losses to the economy amounted to USD 11.9 billion.
