A special award for solidarity and strong support of Ukrainian journalists, media, and human rights defenders was presented today at the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) to the leadership of the authoritative Swedish human rights organization Civil Rights Defenders (CRD)- Executive Director Anders L. Pettersson, Director of Eurasia Department Helen Rask and Program Manager Natalia Gladkova.

The President of NUJU, Sergiy Tomilenko, and the First Secretary of the Union, Lina Kushch, informed the guests about the human rights activities of the NUJU, which is a partner of CRD.

During the meeting, the need to join forces at the international level was discussed in order to protect journalists from gross violations of their rights in wartime conditions.

The NUJU, with the support of CRD, documents testimonies of journalists about war crimes and submits international reports, drawing the attention of the world public to responsibility for the crimes of the Russian Federation against media workers during the war.

In particular, with the financial support of CRD, the NUJU implements the project titled Drawing Attention Of Ukrainian And International Audiences To Serious Violations Of Human Rights And Crimes Against Journalists And Mass Media Committed By The Russian Federation under the slogan Executed Free Speech. The materials collected are handed over to human rights organizations for further use in international campaigns and trials to hold Russia accountable for war crimes. The story production project team includes media professionals who have been forcibly displaced either since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022 or since the beginning of Russian aggression in 2014.

The NUJU actively distributes the collected information in Ukraine and other countries of the world. Dozens of videos in Ukrainian and English have been created about the stories of journalists who suffered as a result of Russian aggression. A total of 102 text materials have been translated into English; a special section has been created on the English version of the NUJU’s website. Brochures with fragments of text stories of the injured journalists were printed in Ukrainian and English. Eleven conference presentations and two webinars were held, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War organized the Executed Free Speech exhibition, and two roundtables were held on its site.
