The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) presents the large-scale project titled Executed Free Speech, which is an overview of the situation with russian assaults on media workers since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The project team has recorded video stories of over 100 journalists who fell victim or became witnesses of war crimes committed by russia. Those are media workers from Kherson, Mariupol, Melitopol, Bucha, Kharkiv, Bakhmut, and other “hot spots” of the war. Some video stories will be available for viewing and discussion during meetings.

We invite journalists to join the event to take place in Ivano-Frankivsk on August 17 at 11 a.m. The meeting was initiated by the Ivano-Frankivsk regional organization of the NUJU.

The NUJU maintains a list of journalists killed since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the list of those in russian captivity, monitors cases of destruction of property and newsroom buildings, persecution of Crimean Tatar citizen journalists in occupied Crimea, and other important topics.

The NUJU is handing over materials on russian war crimes against journalists to the Tribunal for Putin initiative to seek justice.

Speakers:

– Sergiy Tomilenko, the President of the NUJU;

– Mariya Li, the mother of TV presenter and actor Pavlo Li, who was killed in Irpin;

– Vitalii Holubev, the secretary of the NUJU.

The moderator of the event is Viktoriya Plakhta, the coordinator of the Ivano-Frankivsk Journalist Solidarity Center of the NUJU/executive secretary of the Ivano-Frankivsk regional branch of the Union.

The participants will:

  • discuss the issue of russian attacks on media workers;

  • hear testimony from rescued journalists who are currently communicating with eyewitnesses of russian war crimes;

  • watch the video stories of journalists who suffered affected by the large-scale war.

Venue: Ivano-Frankivsk

Date: August 17

Time: 11 a.m.
