Ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March, the European Federation of Journalists’ (EFJ) Gender and Diversity Expert Group (GENDEG) has released important data on the situation of women journalists in Europe.

“We must get rid of the misogynistic culture that exists in many newsrooms and create a safe space for women journalists,” stressed the Secretary General of the EFJ, Ricardo Gutiérrez.

The survey of 859 journalists from 17 European countries found:

  • 64% of women journalists reported difficulties in career progression,
  • 70% believe they are paid less than men,
  • 77% have experienced gender discrimination.

“Media companies need to implement a zero-tolerance policy for gender discrimination and support the career growth of female journalists to management positions,” said Elena Tarifa, the chairperson of GENDEG.
