The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) has printed a new edition of press cards, on which the Russian-language inscription is now absent (it was changed to a French-language one in addition to the inscriptions in Ukrainian and English). The exchange of press cards will begin in the regional organizations of the NUJU starting next week as part of a charity event in support of the families of the killed journalists.

The President of the NUJU, Sergiy Tomilenko, announced this at a meeting with the active members of the Union on Thursday.

“The Russian language has no place in Ukrainian documents, and it has been removed,” said the Union‘s President. “Now the name of our Union on the press cards will be written in three languages: the Ukrainian and English versions remain, and instead of the Russian one, the inscription will be in French, one of the main languages of the European and International Federations of Journalists.”

From now on, new members of the NUJU will receive a traditional “booklet,” a membership card, and a new-style press card upon joining.

In addition, all Union members willing to replace the old press card with a new one will be able to do so in their local organizations by paying UAH 200 to help the families of the killed journalists. Thus, the campaign to replace the old press cards with new ones will be combined with the campaign to help families of fallen colleagues.

As earlier reported, since the first years of Independence, the inscriptions on the press cards went in Ukrainian, English, and Russian. Today, the presence of the Russian language in this document causes outrage. Therefore, on the initiative of Sergiy Tomilenko, the NUJU Secretariat decided to remove the Russian-language inscription while keeping the general design of the cards.
