“A journalist cannot be an impartial observer when it comes to important social events. After all, it is our duty to the audience to report the truth.”

This was stated by the First Secretary of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Lina Kushch, speaking at the seminar Civil Society And Democracy. Challenges And Threats To Journalism Education (Szczecin, Poland).

The participants discussed the role of citizen and professional journalism in conditions of political instability, the responsibility of the media, promoting the development of democratic processes in Ukraine, and how journalism education should adapt to changes.

“Before starting my speech, I asked to show a video about the work of Ukrainian journalists in wartime conditions. I also brought copies of newspapers from the frontline areas and emphasized the importance of verified information for the residents of the combat areas. Subsequently, journalists from Poland and Germany admitted that they had no idea what risks the work of Ukrainian colleagues was associated with and what complex ways the media convey information,” Lina Kushch said.

The photo exhibition Spring of Fear. Kyiv Region is taking place in the frame of the event organized by the Media Education and Interactivity Center and the International Interdisciplinary Research Center of Szczecin University. The exhibition presents pictures of the events of the spring of 2022 by a student of the Faculty of Journalism of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Markiyan Vachkov, and a French photographer of Ukrainian origin, Markiyan Bilak.
