Representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine support the initiative of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) and are ready to join the workgroup on matters of the critical situation with the postal delivery of Ukrainian newspapers.

This is stated in reply to President of the NUJU Sergiy Tomilenko‘s appeal regarding the reform of the Ukrposhta state postal service and its impact on the fate of Ukrainian newspapers. The respective appeal was approved at the extended meeting of the NUJU presidium on July 6.

“The MCIP understands the complexity of the situation; therefore, it does not object to the establishment of a workgroup to resolve the issue of the activities of Ukrainian newspapers and is ready to join its composition.

We draw attention to the fact that Ukrposhta JSC is under the management of the Ministry of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine (hereinafter – the Ministry of Infrastructure), as the decision as for the establishment and operation of the workgroup is under the competence of the Ministry of Infrastructure,” says the letter by Deputy Minister Taras Shevchenko.

As earlier reported, the NUJU proposes to create a workgroup of representatives of the Presidential Office, the Government, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, the NUJU, and newspaper publishers to find a solution for the work of Ukrposhta in the regions. Due to the mass redundancies among mail carriers and the closure of Ukrposhta’s branches, a critical situation has arisen with Ukrainians not having access to postal services.
