The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) has received the original diploma of the international Media Freedom Award from Voices — European Festival of Journalism and Media Freedom. Previously, the NUJU was awarded a digital certificate, but now the Union team in Kyiv is holding a printed copy of the award.

The award was presented to the NUJU and its network of Journalists’ Solidarity Centers (JSC), the support and security infrastructure for Ukrainian journalists created during a full-scale war. Six JSCs, in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv/Sumy, and Ivano-Frankivsk, accept requests from media professionals from all over the country every day.

“This award is primarily for our colleagues in the frontline regions. Those who continue to do journalism under shelling, under drones, under constant risk. Those who do not stop,” emphasized NUJU President Sergiy Tomilenko.

The JSCs network was made possible thanks to the solidarity of the international journalistic community. Sergiy Tomilenko thanked the Voices team, European Festival of Journalism and Media Freedom for the recognition, as well as the partners, the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and UNESCO — for supporting the work of the Union.

The NUJU’s experience in creating JSCs is already spreading beyond Ukraine — in particular, it is being used in the creation of similar JSCs to support journalists in Gaza.
