The Belgian Association of Journalists calls for long-term support for Ukrainian mass media to be included in the recovery plan for Ukraine and to ensure transparent mechanisms for the distribution of financial aid to newsrooms.
Its Secretary General Martine Simonis emphasized this during a round table organized by the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) at the Brussels Press Club together with the European Federation of Journalists.
According to her, the Emergency Fund created by the European and International Federations of Journalists, as well as contributions from trade unions and journalist associations in the EU countries, support Ukrainian media workers in such difficult times.
“Together with international partners, the NUJU helped more than 4,500 journalists and restored the printing of 30 front-line newspapers. However, short-term planning leads to a reduction in the number of jobs for media workers and the formation of news deserts. We must support our colleagues in Ukraine!” added Martine Simonis.
