Letters regarding the need to provide the Ukrposhta state postal service with the barcode of its publication as a product designation by March 14-15 were received by the print media, which are delivered to subscribers by the postal operator.

Since obtaining barcodes is not free, editors perceived this requirement as a necessity to make additional operational costs in conditions where the economic condition of publications is already so difficult.

At the request of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) information service, Serhii Hrechko, the head of the Postal Services Department of Ukrposhta, commented on the situation. According to him, the letter sent to the editors has a monitoring nature. It is aimed at studying the newspaper market, as Ukrposhta intends to purchase new equipment for sorting centers.

“Currently, there is no decision on whether barcodes are mandatory for subscription newspaper editions. Perhaps work with barcodes will begin in the second half of the year,” Serhii Hrechko added.
