The residents of Orikhiv have recently received the second special issue of the Trudova Slava newspaper in the Zaporizhzhia Region. The publication resumed its publishing with the support of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) and the Zaporizhzhia Journalists’ Solidarity Center (JSC).
This time, it was possible to increase the volume of the newspaper from four to eight pages, the circulation to 3,000, and deliver it to all five communities of the district formerly known as Orikhiv and currently as Polohy. In particular, the Orikhiv, Preobrazhenka, Mala Tokmachka, Tavriiske, and Komyshuvakha communities are mentioned. The communities suffer from enemy shelling, but our compatriots still need reliable information there.
Newspaper editor Svitlana Karpenko along with journalists from the Second Channel of German Television, Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF), and rescuers, took copies of Trudova Slava to the district residents.
The meeting with compatriots from Orikhiv at the local fire station was exciting. Rescuers constantly deliver drinking water and bread to residents. And this time, everyone got several copies of the newspaper. Compatriots rejoiced at Trudova Slava because it is an integral part of the Orikhiv area. They hugged, cried… and said how important it is for them to get their native district newspaper.
“There were so many people to meet us there; all are my acquaintances. They started hugging, and there were tears… It was so emotional; I’ve never seen anything like it before,” said Svitlana. “The newsroom team is grateful to everyone who supports our small local media today: Ukrainian colleagues – the President of the NUJU, Sergiy Tomilenko, our compatriot Oksana Brovko, director of the Association of Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine/editor-in-chief of the Zaborona publication, Kateryna Serhatskova, international partners, colleagues-friends from Zaporizhzhia JSC, fellow countrymen-readers from the native Orikhiv district! Thanks to you, the journalists of Trudova Slava keep their information front and have hope for the future!”
The Zaporizhzhia JSC, which had provided Svitlana Karpenko with protective equipment so that the trip was safe, hosted the newspaper’s second issue presentation.
The main topics of the issue were the fate of the displaced compatriots, the activities of non-governmental organizations, and ordinary residents of the Orikhiv district, who remained in its territory and helped their compatriots and soldiers. The newspaper also contains several interesting interviews: with the head of the Orikhiv City Military Administration, which started working more than a month ago, by the elders of Novotroyitske and Omelnytske districts. There is also important information on receiving compensation for those residents of the Orikhiv community who have damaged or destroyed housing.
“How pleasant it is to hold a fresh issue of the newspaper in one’s hands,” says NUJU Secretary Liudmyla Dolzhenko. “The first issue was fascinating. Then we invited Svitlana to us on the air of vision radio Na Dotyk, where she told us how the first issue was created and what efforts were made by many people to make the publication see the light of day again. And we will be glad to see the editor in our studio again.”
