World Press Freedom Day has been celebrated by the international community on May 3 since 1993. It first happened at the initiative of the UNESCO General Conference with the support of the UN General Assembly. On this day in 1991, the Windhoek Declaration was signed in the capital of Namibia. It called on the world governments to ensure the freedom of the press and its democratic nature.
World Press Freedom Day is a reminder to governments to respect the right to freedom of expression. Also, journalists killed while performing their professional duties are commemorated on this day.
