On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on Wednesday, May 3, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) press center will host a roundtable and presentation of the booklet called Murdered Free Speech. Journalists – targets of Russian military offensive.

The booklet investigates Russian attacks on media workers and includes eyewitness evidence of war crimes. In particular, the booklet covers the stories of journalists killed since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion; those who were in Russian captivity; cases of destruction of property and newsroom buildings; persecution of Crimean Tatar citizen journalists in occupied Crimea, and other important topics.

The participants in the booklet discussion will be relatives and friends, colleagues of killed journalists, media workers going to hot spots, displaced journalists, and journalists whose newsrooms were damaged by the war.

Starts at 12 p.m.

Duration is 1.5 hours.

World Press Freedom Day has been celebrated by the international community on May 3 since 1993. It first happened at the initiative of the UNESCO General Conference with the support of the UN General Assembly. On this day in 1991, the Windhoek Declaration was signed in the capital of Namibia. It called on the world governments to ensure the freedom of the press and its democratic nature.

World Press Freedom Day is a reminder to governments to respect the right to freedom of expression. Also, journalists killed while performing their professional duties are commemorated on this day.

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.
