The importance of constant support of the Ukrainian media during the war was discussed in Brussels today during a round table initiated by the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU).

The event was organized by the NUJU together with the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) so that authoritative international experts could hear the testimony of media workers working close to the front line to discuss ways of supporting and financing Ukrainian mass media.

The speakers were Director of the European Federation of Journalists Renate Schroeder; General Secretary of the Belgian Union of Journalists Martine Simonis; First Secretary of the NUJU Lina Kushch; Director of the Information Policy Department of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy Hanna Krasnotup, and Lead Advocate of the Committee to Protect Journalists Tom Gibson.

Lina Kushch emphasized the importance of including media recovery in all recovery programs in Ukraine. Also, she showed the participants copies of several front-line newspapers from the Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Kherson Regions.

“Newspapers have become a powerful symbol of Ukrainian resistance to enemy propaganda,” noted the First Secretary of the NUJU. “Courageous colleagues work in difficult conditions; they need support.”

Experienced media women, coordinator of the Kharkiv Journalists’ Solidarity Center Hanna Chernenko, and journalist Valentyna Fedorchuk from Kherson, told the round table participants about the experience of working on the front line and the importance of supporting local media.
