The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) has officially become a signatory of the Freelance Journalist Safety Principles, developed by the ACOS Alliance. This is an important step in strengthening the protection of Ukrainian journalists, especially those who work in high-risk areas.
ACOS Alliance is an international initiative created in 2014 after the tragic deaths of journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff in Syria. Today, it unites more than 150 media organizations, freelancers’ associations, and press freedom protection groups with the aim of improving the safety of journalists around the world.
By joining the ACOS Alliance, the NUJU confirms its commitment to the following key principles:
- Thorough preparation and assessment of risks before a business trip.
- Provision of adequate insurance for journalists.
- Provision of appropriate protective equipment and safety training.
- Provision of medical care and support.
- Protection of journalists’ digital security.
- Fair salaries and timely payments.
- Provision of psychological support as needed.
- Protection of the rights of both full-time and freelance journalists.
- Facilitating the exchange of security information between media organizations.
- Support for families of journalists in case of abduction, injury, or death.
Serhii Tomilenko, the President of the NUJU, commented: “In the conditions of war, the safety of journalists is the number one priority. Joining the ACOS Alliance will allow us to use international experience and resources to better protect our colleagues who risk their lives every day covering events in Ukraine.”
This cooperation opens up new opportunities for the NUJU in the field of security training and the exchange of experience and resources with international partners. This is especially important in the context of the current situation in Ukraine, where journalists often work in extremely dangerous conditions.
The NUJU calls on all Ukrainian media organizations to familiarize themselves with the Freelance Journalist Safety Principles and implement them in their daily practice. Together, we can create a safer environment for journalistic activity and strengthen independent journalism in Ukraine.
