The editorial staff of the student newspaper Molodyi Zhurnalist or MoZhu [Young Journalist], headed by the assistant of the Department of Theory and Practice of Journalism, Orest Mayevskyi, visited the Lviv Journalists’ Solidarity Center (JSC).

Yaroslav Klymovych, the head of the Lviv regional organization of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), told the students about the work of the union and its main tasks in the conditions of a full-scale invasion. It was also about the activities of the JSC and the new challenges faced by journalists today. The coordinator of the JSC in Lviv, Nataliya Voitovych, told the team about the peculiarities of journalism in the conditions of war and also emphasized the importance of checking all information published by the media.

“Future journalists must realize that freedom of speech also bears great responsibility. A journalist is simply obliged to check all information to refer to primary sources. This is very important for society as it focuses on what Ukrainian publications write. Especially in times of war, we must provide Ukrainians with truthful information, tell the truth. It is extremely pleasant that from the first year, you try yourself in the future profession, create your own publication. Reading your first issue, you realize that you took a very responsible approach to this task. In your materials, you touched on very relevant topics not only for students of the Faculty of Journalism of Lviv University but also for Lviv and Ukraine in general. The doors of the Journalists’ Solidarity Center are always open for you. You can come and work here, create your journalistic materials, and communicate with journalists who visit the Center. Here, you will always find support and home comfort,” emphasized Nataliya Voitovych.

Assistant of the Department of Theory and Practice of Journalism, Orest Mayevskyi, told the audience about the restored student newspaper MoZhu. He presented the new issue of the newspaper, talked about its history and plans for the future.

“The MoZhu newspaper has a long history at the faculty; however, under certain circumstances, it is often an irregular publication. This year, together with the students, we want to start a new history of this newspaper and put it on a systematic flow and publish it, if not once every two weeks, then at least, once a month. Also, it is important that it will be distributed to all faculties, that is, to the entire University. This is the first pilot number. Currently, it is only for our faculty and for editorial students to be able to realize themselves in materials for practice. The second number will already be in the hands of our rector. Many thanks to the NUJU for systematically supporting young student initiatives; they invite you to join them. Thank you for your cooperation and promotion of the product; it is very important for young journalists. In addition, our cooperation gives novice journalists the opportunity to establish close contacts with many well-known practicing journalists and to constantly improve their professional level,” said Orest Mayevskyi.

During the meeting, they also discussed the problems faced by student publications and ways to solve them. The head of the Lviv regional organization emphasized that students can contact the Union and the Center at any time and promised to help young journalists in further professional development.
