Lviv JSC hosts discussion about challenges faced by Ukrainian newsrooms

The event was attended by local mass media workers, displaced journalists, students and teachers of Lviv universities, and bloggers. Besides, UNESCO representative Theresa Chorbacher also joined the discussion.

According to Andrii Bolkun, the head of the Lviv Journalists’ Solidarity Center (JSC), the war is the main reason for media workers’ problems. The lack of advertising and state support against the background of a difficult economic situation put the newsrooms in a difficult financial situation. The participants in the discussion agreed that without independent media, it is impossible to build a democratic European state. Therefore, the support of foreign donors is especially important today.

Theresa Chorbacher thanked for the opportunity to participate in the discussion and hear about the most acute problems of the Ukrainian media. UNESCO is ready to help in solving them, she stressed.

As earlier reported, the Journalists’ Solidarity Centers is an initiative of the NUJU implemented with the support of the International and European Federations of Journalists and UNESCO. The initiative is designated to help media representatives working in Ukraine during the war. The Centers operate in Kyiv, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro and provide journalists with organizational, technical, legal, psychological, and other types of assistance.

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. It contributes to peace and security by promoting international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication, and information. UNESCO promotes knowledge sharing and the free flow of ideas to accelerate mutual understanding.
