“Local media is a lifeline for population under occupation,” said renowned American author and human rights expert Anne Nelson

Speaking to the First Secretary of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Lina Kushch, at the 69^th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which is taking place in New York, she emphasized:

“In occupied territories, where there is no Internet and no access to information, a newspaper becomes a vital necessity. It tells people where to get food, which areas are safe – it is absolutely necessary for survival.”

Anne Nelson noted the extraordinary courage of Ukrainian journalists covering the war and representing the interests of the civilian population. According to her, they deserve international support and respect, because their activities are a fundamental aspect of freedom of speech and international human rights.

The expert has extensive experience working with media professionals – she was the director of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and created the first training course on human rights reporting at the Columbia School of Journalism.
