As of November 20, 2024, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion by the russian federation of the territory of Ukraine, the occupiers had killed at least 105 media workers.
According to the verified data provided by the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) and the International Federation of Journalists, among those killed were 18 media persons who were performing their professional duties; nine media workers registered as civilian victims, and 78 media representatives mobilized for the defense of Ukraine to the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
“If russia had not unleashed this shameful war, all our colleagues, journalists, and media workers could continue to work successfully, create quality information content for their audience, write articles, make reports, and shoot TV stories and documentaries. They could benefit people and contribute to Ukrainian and world culture,” says NUJU President Sergiy Tomilenko. “But the aggressor state decided they should die leaving their families in severe grief, people uninformed, deceived by russian propaganda and intimidated.”
Citizen media workers killed while performing professional duties:
- Ihor Hudenko, a Ukrainian photographer and video blogger, disappeared during shelling in Kharkiv on February 26, 2022. His body was found on February 27, 2022. According to the conclusion of the doctors, his death was not violent.
- Yevhen Sakun, a Ukrainian photojournalist for the LIVE publication and a correspondent for EFE, was killed in a missile attack on the Kyiv TV tower on March 1, 2022.
- Brent Anthony Renaud, an American journalist/former correspondent for The New York Times/reporter for Time/documentarian/ Peabody Award winner, was shot dead by russian soldiers at a checkpoint in Irpin on March 13, 2022.
- Maksym Levin, a Ukrainian photojournalist a correspondent for LB.ua and other publications, went missing on March 13, 2022. He was found dead near the village of Huta-Mezhyhirska, Kyiv Region, on April 1, 2022. An investigation conducted by Reporters Without Borders showed that the journalist had been tortured and executed.
- Pierre Zakrzewski, an Irish photojournalist for Fox News, was killed along with Oleksandra Kuvshynova on March 14, 2022, when their car came under fire in the village of Horenka, Kyiv Region.

- Oksana Baulina, a russian journalist for The Insider publication/an activist of the Anti-Corruption Foundation of Alexei Navalny, was killed in russia’s shelling of Kyiv on March 23, 2022.
- Mantas Kvedaravicius, a Lithuanian filmmaker and documentary filmmaker, was killed on April 2, 2022, while trying to leave the city of Mariupol, whose life he had been documenting for many years.
- Yevhen Bal, a Ukrainian journalist/writer/veteran of the Soviet submarine fleet/volunteer, was killed on April 2, 2022, after being tortured by the russian military in Mariupol.
- Roman Nezhyborets, a Ukrainian media personality/video engineer of the Chernihiv-based Dytynets TV channel, was killed in the village of Yahidne near Chernihiv in early April 2022.
- Zoreslav Zamoiskyi was a Ukrainian journalist for the Hromada Pryirpinnia publications and Information Portal. His body with signs of violent death was found in Bucha, Kyiv Region, on April 13, 2022.
- Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff, a French journalist for the BFMTV channel, was killed by shrapnel on May 30, 2022, while covering the evacuation of the civilian population from the city of Sievierodonetsk (Luhansk Region).
- Bohdan Bitik, a Ukrainian freelancer, was killed by a russian bullet near the Antonivskyi Bridge in Kherson on April 26, 2023, while helping the Italian journalist Corrado Zunino.
- Arman Soldin, a French AFP video journalist, was killed in a rocket attack near Chasiv Yar, Donetsk Region, on May 9, 2023, while preparing a television story.
- Viktoriya Amelina, a Ukrainian writer engaged in documenting war crimes, was killed on July 1, 2023, as a result of wounds received in enemy shelling of the outskirts of Kramatorsk on June 27, 2023.
- Volodymyr Myroniuk, Ukrainian and American freelance photojournalist, was killed while taking photos near Kurdyumivka in Donbas on September 25, 2023.
- Ryan Evans, a British security adviser for the Reuters agency, worked as part of a team that covered the military operations in the Donetsk Region, and was killed on August 24, 2024 as a result of a russian missile attack on the Sapphire Hotel in Kramatorsk.
- Viktoriya Roshchyna, a journalist for Hromadske and a freelance writer for Ukrainian Pravda, disappeared on August 3, 2023, during a trip to the occupied territories to prepare materials about the life of the local population. In April 2024, the russian authorities admitted that the journalist had been detained. There were talks about its exchange. She died on September 19, 2024 during her transportation from Taganrog to Moscow.
Journalists killed not while performing professional duties:
- Dilierbek Shakirov, a Ukrainian journalist for the Navkolo Tebe information weekly/a Dim Nadii charitable foundation member, was shot with an automatic weapon in Zelenivka, Kherson Region, on February 26.
- Pavlo Lee [Pavlo Li], a Ukrainian actor/presenter for the Dom TV channel/volunteer, was shot by the russian military in Irpin, Kyiv Region, on March 6, 2022.
- Viktor Diedov, a Ukrainian operator for the Sigma TV channel, was killed in the shelling of his house in Mariupol on March 11, 2022.
- Oksana Haidar (aka Ruda Pani [Red Lady]), a Ukrainian journalist and blogger, was killed in shelling by russian artillery in the village of Shevchenkove, Brovary District, Kyiv Region, between March 11 and 12, 2022.
- Liliya Humianova, a Ukrainian journalist/journalism teacher/head of the artistic department of the Left Bank District Center for Children and Youth Creativity, was killed in the enemy shelling of Mariupol on March 19, 2022.
- Nataliya Kharakoz, a Ukrainian journalist/writer in Greek and russian, was killed in the enemy bombing of Mariupol on March 29, 2022.
- Valeriya Hlodan, a graduate of the Faculty of Journalism of Odesa National University named after Mechnykova, who was on maternity leave, was killed along with her mother and 3-month-old daughter in a rocket attack on Odesa on April 23, 2022.
- Vira Hyrych, a Ukrainian journalist/Radio Liberty producer, was killed in the enemy shelling of Kyiv on April 28, 2022.
- Volodymyr Datsenko, a Ukrainian public figure/volunteer/ Aidar soldier/journalist for the Road Control Vinnytsia publication, was killed in a missile attack on Vinnytsia on July 14, 2022.
Journalists killed within the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine:
- Serhii Pushchenko, a Ukrainian artist/culturologist/journalist/military serviceman, was killed together with his comrades from the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in a battle in Vasylkiv, Kyiv Region on March 2, 2022.
- Viktor Dudar, a Ukrainian military journalist/80th Airborne Assault Brigade soldier, was killed during the defense of Mykolayiv on March 6, 2022.
- Oleksandr Lytkin, a Ukrainian journalist for KNK Media, was killed in enemy shelling in the village of Romanivka near Irpin, Kyiv Region, on March 13.
- Oleksii Chernyshev, Ukrainian photojournalist, front-line photographer, cooperated with Reuters and AFP agencies, in 2017-2018 and since February 2022 – a military serviceman. He disappeared on March 13, 2022, together with his friend, photojournalist Maksym Levin. Found dead near the village of Huta-Mezhyhirska, Kyiv Region, on April 1, 2022. The investigation showed that he was executed.
- Oleh Yakunin, a Ukrainian journalist/editor of the Zaporizhzhia-based site misto.zp.ua/military serviceman, was killed on March 18, 2022.
- Oleksandr Kotsukon, a Ukrainian journalist/employee of the military press service/ Azov regiment soldier/student of the Department of Journalism, advertising, and PR Technologies of the Cherkasy National University named after Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, was killed during the defense of Mariupol on March 22, 2022.
- Yurii Oliinyk, a Ukrainian cameraman and photographer for Channel 24/a military man, was killed in the battles near Popasna, Luhansk Region, on March 23, 2022.
- Serhii Zayikovskyi, a Ukrainian historian/translator/publicist/ Armed Forces serviceman, was killed near Kyiv on March 24, 2022.
- Denys Kotenko, a Ukrainian journalist/ employee of the Veterans Affairs Ministry press service, was killed in a battle with russian occupiers near Kyiv on March 24, 2022.
- Maksym Medynskyi, a Ukrainian journalist/an employee of the Infrastructure Ministry press service/a lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed in an artillery fire near Kharkiv on April 29, 2022.

- Kostiantyn Kits, a Ukrainian photographer/videographer for the Lutsk-based channel Avers/an AFU soldier, was killed in artillery shelling in the Donetsk Region on May 17, 2022.
- Roman Zhuk, a Ukrainian photographer/videographer from Mukachevo/one of the founders of the volunteer project Chysto.de/an AFU soldier, was killed on May 26, 2022.
- Vitalii Derekh, a Ukrainian journalist/correspondent of Ternopil publications/junior sergeant/commander of the anti-tank detachment of the 1st Brigade named after Ivan Bohun of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed in an airstrike near the city of Popasna, Luhansk Region, on May 28, 2022.
- Oleksii Chubashev, a Ukrainian journalist/war correspondent/author and presenter of the program for the military Recrut.UA/former director of the Armiya FM, was killed at the front during the defense of Sievierodonetsk on June 10, 2022.
- Abdulkarim Gulamov (aka Karim), a Ukrainian journalist/TV presenter for the M2 channel/military serviceman, was killed on July 17, 2022.
- Mykola Rachok, a Ukrainian journalist/author of materials and news editor for the InfoCar publication, was killed in a battle with the Wagnerites on July 21, 2022.
- Oleksii Yurchenko, a Ukrainian journalist/operator of the Priamyi TV channel/AFU serviceman, was killed during the liberation of Balakliya, Kharkiv Region, on September 8, 2022.
- Oleh Shemchuk, a Ukrainian investigative journalist from Zaporizhzhia, a machine gunner of the 53rd SMB of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed by shrapnel on the Bakhmut Axis on September 15, 2022. It was possible to take the body from the battlefield and carry out a DNA examination with great delay. He was buried on April 4, 2024.
- Dmytro Shypovskyi, a Ukrainian TV and film cameraman, in recent years, cooperated with Privat TV: Kharkiv and the Al Jazeera TV channel/an AFU serviceman was killed under enemy mortar fire near the village of Druzhba, Donetsk Region, on September 21, 2022.
- Yurii Leliavskyi, a Ukrainian journalist/television personality/captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine/head of the public relations service of the 80th AFU separate airborne assault brigade, was killed in a battle with russian invaders on September 28, 2022.
- Serhii Sylkin, a Ukrainian media personality/former sound engineer of Suspilne Ivano-Frankivsk/soldier of the 10th separate mountain assault brigade, was killed in a battle near Bakhmut, Donetsk Region, on October 17, 2022.
- Vasyl Yavorskyi, a director of the TV channels Pershyi Zakhidnyi and Espresso, a soldier of the 103rd AFU separate brigade, was killed in artillery fire on October 21, 2022.
- Andrii Zahoruiko, a journalist and director of the Kyiv TV channel/an AFU serviceman, was killed in mortar and artillery fire in the village of Spirne near Bakhmut on November 3, 2022.
- Vladyslav Dzikovskyi, system administrator at the Detektor Media/serviceman/senior machine-gunner, went missing between Kreminna and Serebrianka on December 13, 2022. At the beginning of April 2023, they reported that he had been killed.
- Anton Kolomiiets, a TV presenter from Kherson, an AFU serviceman, was killed in an artillery fire near Bakhmut on December 20, 2022.

- Ihor Teriokhin, a journalist from Odesa (worked at RIAK TV and radio company within the Hlas Mediagroup team)/writer/restaurant keeper/serviceman of 126 AFU brigade, was killed on January 23 in the Kherson Region.
- Pavlo Tymoshenko, an operator of the Cherkasy headquarters of the Inter TV channel/a territorial defense serviceman, was killed near Vuhledar on February 5, 2023.
- Serhii Klymenko, a technical service employee of Suspilne Kherson/a Ukrainian serviceman, was killed in a battle in Mariyinka, Donetsk Region, on February 5, 2023.
- Oleksii Borys, a journalist of Yurydychna Hazeta/58th brigade serviceman, was killed on February 9, 2023.
- Oleksii Olkhovyk, a Suspilne cameraman/Ukrainian military, died from a fatal wound, probably during a shooting battle on March 13, 2023.
- Oleksandr Tsakhniv, an investigative journalist for the Vchasno news agency from Pokrovsk, Donetsk Region/an AFU serviceman, was killed during shelling in the Bakhmut direction on March 25, 2023.

- Oleksandr Bondarenko, a journalist for BVS Ukraine, Ukraine TV and radio company/communicator/ an AFU serviceman, was killed in a battle near Kreminna, Luhansk Region, in April 2023.
- Volodymyr Mukan, a journalist for Hazeta Po-Ukrayinsky/magazine Kraina and Gazeta.ua internet portal/an AFU junior sergeant, was killed while performing a combat mission near Bakhmut, Donetsk Region.
- Denys Kryvyi, a naturalist photographer, author of numerous photo publications in the media, and serviceman of the Special Operations Forces, was killed in the battles for Bakhmut on May 11, 2023.
- Ivan Kuzminskyi, a researcher of ancient Ukrainian music, candidate of sciences, director of the children’s television channel Maliatko TV, a military serviceman, was killed in a battle near the settlement of Dibrova, Luhansk Region, on May 17, 2023.
- Yevhen Osiievskyi, a journalist and author of the publications Kunsht and Spilne, a military serviceman, was killed in the battle near Bakhmut on May 22, 2023.
- Viktor Petrov, the first editor-in-chief of the Sykhiv Media online publication, a military serviceman, was killed in the battles on the Bakhmut axis on May 29, 2023.
- Petro Tsurukin, a television journalist, editor-in-chief of the One For All project at the STB TV channel, host of the Kyiv Live TV channel, and a military serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He went missing on June 4, 2023; his death was confirmed and officially reported on March 18, 2024.
- Roman Chornomaz, a photographer and journalist from Uman, Cherkasy Region, sniper of the Svoboda battalion of the National Guard of Ukraine, was killed in a battle on the Bakhmut axis on June 13, 2023.
- Ivan Shulha, a sound engineer of the STB TV channel, musician, and serviceman of the 241st Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed near the village of Zakitne, Kramatorsk District, Donetsk Region, on June 14, 2023.
- Anton Klitnyi, a journalist of the information portal Stopkor, founder of the 25.info news agency, public figure, and serviceman of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, was killed from a shrapnel wound in the battle near Orikhiv on June 25, 2023.
- Maksym Shvartsman, photo-correspondent from Chernivtsi media agency ASS [ACC in Ukrainian]/soldier of Chernivtsi territorial defense, was killed while counteroffensive on the Bakhmut axis on July 15, 2023.
- Kostiantyn Hnitetskyi, TV operator of Suspilne from the city of Rivne, a soldier of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, was killed as a result of mortar fire near Dibrova, Luhansk Region, on July 16, 2023.
- Dmytro Rybakov, an economic columnist, journalist of the Tonis TV channel, author of publications at LB.ua, editor and journalist at Forbes Ukraine, Chas News, candidate of historical sciences, platoon commander in the 47th Mechanized Brigade Mahura, was killed during an offensive battle on the Melitopol axis on July 17, 2023.
- Ihor Zakharov, a TV operator. He worked on the TV channels Ukraine and 1+1, joined the National Guard of Ukraine at the beginning of the war. He went missing on August 1, 2023, near Yampol, Donetsk Region. After his death was confirmed and his body identified, he was buried on September 19, 2024.
- Dmytro Sinchenko, journalist, a blogger from Kropyvnytskyi, author of the publications The Week, Radio Liberty, and others, public activist, and serviceman of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, disappeared at the end of August 2023 in early March 2024; DNA examination confirmed his death.
- Andrii Kryshtal, the editor-in-chief of the Lviv newspaper, Samooborona, was a serviceman of the 103rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade of the AFU. He was undergoing treatment after a serious injury but died on September 27, 2023.
- Taras Davydiuk, the founder and editor-in-chief of the Horyn.info publication from the Rivne Region, an AFU soldier, was killed on the outskirts of Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia Region, as a result of an attack by an enemy strike drone on November 3, 2023.
- Oleksandr Popov, a former cameraman for Suspilne Mykolayiv, a soldier of the 95th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade, was killed defending Kupiyansk, Kharkiv Region, on November 22, 2023.
- Oleksii Andreiev, former operator of Mariupol TV stations 7 and Sigma TV, former employee of Azovstal, since the beginning of the full-scale war – a serviceman of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, went missing on November 29, 2023 in the village of Bohdanivka, Bakhmut District, after identification of the body, he was buried in Chernivtsi on November 2, 2024.
- Denys Yatsiuk, a Ukrainian military man, a former cameraman for Channel 51 (Dnipro), a member of the NUJU, was killed near Avdiyivka in the Donetsk Region on December 14, 2023.
- Roman Riazhskykh, a Ukrainian journalist, copywriter, and AFU serviceman, was seriously wounded during artillery shelling near Mariyinka in the Donetsk Region on January 4, 2024. He died in the Mechnykov Dnipropetrovsk Regional Clinical Hospital on January 6, 2024.
- Maksym Kryvtsov, a Ukrainian poet from Rivne, media worker, and junior AFU sergeant, was killed on January 7, 2024.
- Petrenko Volodymyr, a journalist and librarian from Malyn, Zhytomyr Region, an AFU serviceman, was killed in mortar shelling near the village of Synkivka, Kharkiv Region, on February 22, 2024.
- Anton Yakovenko, editing director of the XSport TV channel, originally from the Kirovohrad Region, was a mortarman of the 72nd Chornykh Zaporozhtsiv Separate Brigade, was killed near Vuhledar on February 26, 2024.
- Oles Samchuk, a graduate of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Journalism of Shevchenko University. He was born in the Rivne Region and mobilized in the Armed Forces of Ukraine immediately after graduation in 2023. He was killed while performing a combat mission near Kreminna on March 11, 2023.
- Mykola Oranskyi, an engineer at Hromadske / a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was killed while performing a combat mission near Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia Region, on March 22, 2024.
- Andrii Topchii, a journalist for the Fakty publication, a participant in the Anti-Terrorist Operation and the full-scale war, a combat medic, was killed on April 20, 2024, while performing a combat mission near Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia Region.
- Alla Pushkaruk, a journalist for the publications Ukrainian Week, Chytomo / a journalist and photographer of the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps, and later – a mortar. She was born in the Volyn Region. She was killed in the Donetsk Region as a result of a rocket fire on April 25, 2024.
- Yurii Siliuk, a TV operator from Volyn television and later from Hromadske.Volyn (Lutsk) / a soldier of the Territorial Defense Troops. He was killed while performing a combat mission near Arkhanhelske in the Donetsk Region on April 26, 2024.
- Oleksandr Mashlai, former editor-in-chief of the Pravyi Postup, a soldier of the Armed Forces, was killed while performing a combat mission on the Avdiyivka Axis on May 7, 2024.
- Iryna Tsybukh, a Ukrainian journalist from Lviv / project manager of Suspilne / paramedic of Hospitallers, was killed during a rotation on the Kharkiv Axis on May 29, 2024.
- Arsen Fedosenko, a photographer of the media center of the Strategic Communications Department of the AFU, captain of the AFU, was engaged in photographing war crimes and was killed on June 10, 2024, in the Kharkiv Region as a result of an aerial bomb explosion.
- Oleksii Sapuha, a photographer and ornithologist from Mykolayiv, a soldier of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, was killed in the Donetsk Region on July 30, 2024.

- Bohdan Markevych, a lecturer at the Faculty of Journalism of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, a military medic, was killed in shelling of the Saint Panteleimon clinical hospital in Sumy on September 28, 2024.
- Dmytro Bohuslavskyi, the head of the Journalist Fund of the NUJU, a long-time employee of the press service of the State Emergency Service, an officer of the Armed Forces, was killed on November 15, 2024, on the southern front.
