Oleksii Kovalchuk, the head of the Dnipro organization of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), has visited the Chernivtsi Journalists’ Solidarity Center (JSC) of the NUJU.
For almost a year, Chernivtsi and Dnipro have been connected not only by Union’s interests. The JSCs, created on the basis of local organizations and with the NUJU’s assistance, successfully assist individual journalists and media newsrooms.
During the discussion of professional issues, the coordinator of the JSC/head of the Chernivtsi regional organization, Volodymyr Bober, and Oleksii Kovalchuk noted that the work of the JSCs has a positive effect on strengthening the position of the NUJU both in the territory of Ukraine and at the international level.
Colleagues called, in particular, the invitation to and speech of the NUJU President, Sergiy Tomilenko, at the UN General Assembly in New York as a vivid example of the recognition of the NUJU in the world. Such an event took place for the first time since the beginning of our independence.
“Thanks to the funds the NUJU manages to attract from foreign partners, a significant part of journalists’ requests for training, technical support, local newspapers revival in the de-occupied and front-line territories is possible,” noted Oleksii Kovalchuk.

As earlier reported, the Journalists’ Solidarity Centers is an initiative of the NUJU implemented with the support of the International and European Federations of Journalists and UNESCO. The initiative is designated to help media representatives working in Ukraine during the war. The Centers operate in Kyiv, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro and provide journalists with organizational, technical, legal, psychological, and other types of assistance.

It contributes to peace and security by promoting international cooperation in education, sciences, culture, communication, and information. UNESCO promotes knowledge sharing and the free flow of ideas to accelerate mutual understanding. UNESCO is working closely with its partner organizations in Ukraine to provide support to journalists on the ground.
