We invite you to a special presentation and discussion dedicated to the improvement of practices and compliance with ethical standards in the coverage of information about victims and witnesses of international crimes in Ukraine. This event is designed specifically for Ukrainian journalists, who play an important role in bringing such sensitive stories to the general public.

The event will consist of two 45-minute presentations by renowned experts in the field of transitional justice and media communications, as well as a panel discussion.

Part 1: Ensuring the integrity of the probative value of victim testimony: lessons learned

Speaker: Nerma Jelacic

Nerma Jelacic is the Director of Communications at the Commission for International Justice and Accountability (CIJA). With extensive experience in international criminal justice, she has worked on some of the most high-profile cases in various international contexts, ensuring that victims’ voices are heard while preserving the integrity of their testimony. She worked as the head of the media office of the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and is one of the founders of the Balkan network of investigative journalism.

Part 2: Do no harm: key aspects of reporting on victims of crime

Speaker: Refik Hodzic

Refik Hodzic is a senior advisor at the European Institute of Peace (EIP) and an expert on transitional justice who has worked on war crimes, human rights, and media issues for over two decades. His extensive experience includes serving as Communications Director of the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ). His work highlights the importance of ethical reporting and the imperative to do no harm when reporting stories involving victims and witnesses of international crimes.

Organized in collaboration with Human Rights Vector, this event will provide an exceptional opportunity to learn from leading experts, participate in meaningful discussions, and improve your skills in covering these important topics. Description of the program entitled Restoring Dignity And Justice In Ukraine

This project is part of the program of the consortium Restoring Dignity And Justice In Ukraine, which is aimed at increasing responsibility for international crimes committed in Ukraine. The program is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and implemented by the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) in partnership with T.M.C., Asser Instituut, Center for International Legal Cooperation (CILC), and Netherlands Helsinki Committee (NHC).

The project is aimed at institutional strengthening and capacity development of key entities in Ukraine that deal with international crimes: prosecutors, police, judges, as well as journalists, and public organizations. We believe that with the support of the international community, Ukraine will be able to increase responsibility for international crimes.
