Taking the floor at the annual meeting of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) in The Hague, the EFJ President, Maja Sever, noted the effectiveness of the Journalists’ Solidarity Centers in Ukraine. She also emphasized that the protection of journalists has always been a priority for the federation.
“A few weeks ago, at the GENDEG meeting, our Ukrainian colleague Lina Kushch [the NUJU First Secretary, – Ed.] showed us what one of our six solidarity centers actually looks like. I saw that we provide substantial and valuable assistance to every journalist on the spot in our solidarity center,” the EFJ president noted.
Maja Sever invited the meeting participants to observe a minute of silence to honor the memory of 32-year-old French journalist Arman Soldin, who was killed while preparing a report in the war zone in eastern Ukraine, as well as all journalists killed in Europe while performing their professional duties.
Besides, she emphasized that protecting the safety of journalists is a priority of the EFJ.
“Working with you, I learned about the people behind statistics and numbers. I have met people who have become targets and decided to dedicate themselves to the fight for true and accurate journalism because they are journalists. Our organization supports these people and helps them. And this makes me proud,” said the EFJ President.
