The European and International Federations of Journalists (EFJ and IFJ) express solidarity with the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) and demand the immediate release of a Ukrainian journalist and a member of the Union, Iryna Levchenko.

This was announced in a statement posted on the website of the IFJ.

On May 6, journalist Iryna Levchenko and her husband Oleksandr disappeared in Melitopol, occupied by Russian troops. Two weeks later, it was found out that the Levchenkos had been detained by the occupation authorities without explanation.

“The IFJ and EFJ express solidarity with the NUJU in condemning the illegal arrest of Levchenko and call on the authorities of the occupied territories to immediately release her and all other journalists held behind bars,” the message reads.

The NUJU expresses its gratitude to colleagues and recalls that the illegal arrest of a veteran journalist and her husband is another challenge created by the occupation authorities of Melitopol to all human and international norms and laws!
