DW Global Media Forum 2023 was opened with a performance by the Free Choir of Belarus in Germany. The choir has become a symbol of protest against the dictatorial regime, and its members cover their faces during performances in order to avoid arrest in their home country.

This was reported by the First Secretary of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), Lina Kushch, a participant in the forum.

Overcoming Division is the theme of this year’s two-day forum. It is one of the most significant media events in Europe, which gathered several hundred journalists from all over the world.

“The issue is what we can do for journalists to overcome social divisions. What is our personal responsibility for their creation? Social platforms have deepened the divide. Not only hate speech and populism, but quality journalism needs to be promoted,” Deutsche Welle Director General, Peter Limbourg, emphasized when opening the conference.

The program of the forum includes panel discussions, workshops, and communication between media persons.

The work of Ukrainian journalists will be discussed in the course of the negotiations dedicated to war coverage and media workers in exile.
