The apartment of Mykola Shkaraban, the head of the broadcasting network development and licensing department at the DIM TV channel, was seriously damaged as a result of the March 21 missile attack on Kyiv.
“When something hit it, we were already awake. My daughter and wife managed to jump out into the corridor. I didn’t have time and saw through the window how this orange-red horror was approaching. And glass flew at me… But fortunately, it didn’t touch me. Later, when the rescuers came to put out the fire in the house opposite, I went to lie down for a while because I have a certain illness. I got into bed and felt that it was full of broken glass… But, you know, there was no cut!” says Mykola Shkaraban.
Mykola Shkaraban concludes that “in every bad thing, there is something good.”
“Four houses were damaged here. The epicenter was located in a building nearby, which was considered Tatarka’s “business card” – four floors burned down there. The roof of our house was seriously damaged; all the windows were blown out,” Mykola Shkaraban said. “The legal status of our building is such that the residents have to solve all problems on their own, so the situation in this regard is not easy.”
Part of the windows will need replacing, not only the double-glazed windows but also the frames. The police documented the damage, and soon, the craftsmen covered the windows with film and chipboard.
“The explosion destroyed all our power lines, but the electricians promptly restored them. This means that when the windows are closed, we will be able to turn on the heaters,” Mykola Shkaraban said.
Mykola Shkaraban is currently battling a serious illness, so he has to work mostly remotely. He calls his today’s adventure “every day” as in wartime.
“Everything is calm with us; it’s not scary. Not what happened in the neighboring house,” he says. “That’s really a problem – it burned for more than an hour, and the rescuers had difficulty extinguishing it. Fortunately, no one died, but people burned everything they had….”
The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) will provide Mykola Shkaraban with a small amount of financial assistance for the restoration of the apartment. We express our solidarity with our colleague, admire his resilience, and wish him a speedy recovery.
