The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) is a national all-Ukrainian creative union that unites journalists and other media workers professionally engaged in journalist and media activities.
The NUJU was registered in independent Ukraine in 1992. It has about 18,000 members and has representation offices in all regions of Ukraine, cooperates with international organizations and institutions and develops international relations with associations and organizations of press workers of other countries.
The NUJU is a member of the International and European Federations of Journalists.
Since 2017, Sergiy Tomilenko has been the President of the NUJU.
To help media representatives working in Ukraine during the war, a network of Journalists’ Solidarity Centers (JSC) was established at the initiative of the NUJU with the support of the International and European Federations of Journalists, UNESCO, and other international partners. Since 2022, the centers have operated in Kyiv, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipro. They provide journalists with organizational, technical, legal, psychological, and other types of assistance. NUJU First Secretary Lina Kushch heads the JSC network.
As of the beginning of 2023, with the assistance of JSCs, more than 2,000 journalists who were in trouble received emergency financial support, grants for professional journalist activities, as well as professional equipment. The JSCs help displaced journalists settle in a new place and find jobs. There are free rental centers within the JSCs, where every journalist working in the frontline areas can get protective equipment: a bulletproof vest, a helmet, and a tactical first aid kit.
